Las Vegas resident Antonia Garduno thought joint pain was a part of aging. On long car rides or after sitting for a while, her right hip hurt, and her leg felt tired. The pain made walking difficult. Eventually, she asked her primary care provider about it.
An X-ray determined she needed orthopedic care. For the first time since bringing her youngest child into the world 42 years ago, Antonia visited Alta Vista Regional Hospital.
Back in Stride
Originally, Antonia asked for a cortisone injection, but it was too late. There was no padding in her joint, so bone rubbed on bone. She met with Mital S. Patel, M.D., orthopedic surgeon, and one of only a handful of surgeons in New Mexico to perform anterior approach hip replacement or total hip replacement. Surgery was the only long-term solution.
On Nov. 10, 2022, Antonia was prepped for surgery. She was at the hospital for approximately 8 hours before leaving on a walker.
“Everyone at Alta Vista Regional Hospital did a great job — Dr. Patel, the anesthesiologist and nurses,” Antonia says. “I was scared going into surgery, but they were very professional and helped put me at ease.”
While she had pain in the early days of rehabilitation, she has graduated from physical therapy. Now, she’s exercising five days a week, regaining her strength and recommending Dr. Patel to anyone who needs a hip replacement.
